What is Curcumin?

Curcumin is a compound of the root turmeric, which is grown in India and Southeastern Asia, or there is this definition I found on Wiki.  In ground form, is the most common use of the turmeric root, as a spice in food preparation.  Though studies have shown that turmeric has many health benefits, the compound, curcumin is the meat of the health benefits.

Curcumin is said to only be in about 2% of the turmeric root so if you are taking turmeric alone, you will need to take large amounts, in fact, you probably couldn’t get enough of the turmeric in your system!  Health benefits found in the root compound include control of; inflammation, pain, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and skin health, among many others.  Some studies have shown that curcumin even has an anticancer effect!

First and foremost, read the label.  Your curcumin supplement should show that it has a minimum standardized to 95%, curcuminoids, Better yet, a minimum standardized 95%, Tetra-hydro-curcuminoids allows all the active curcumin to enter your bloodstream immediately.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis, (RA) is an autoimmune disease.  A healthy immune systems primary job is to search out any harmful bacteria and viruses.  When an infection is present our immune system jumps into action and produces antibodies to fight it off.

When we have RA, our immune system mistakenly thinks we have an infection, and so, the antibodies attack our healthy joints.  This, in turn, causes inflammation, swelling, pain and in the long run, debilitating joint deformation as well as, problems in the circulatory and respiratory systems.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disease with no cure at the moment.  The treatment for RA is to slow the progression of the disease with medications, symptom relief, and lifestyle changes. Essential Oils  For Rheumatoid Arthritis And Their Benefits

There are many essential oils that have been found to help with RA symptoms. Below, I will introduce you to three “ESSENTIAL” oils for rheumatoid arthritis that I find very helpful. Popular essential oils for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers include Basil, Cypress, and Marjoramessential oils for rheumatoid arthritis

 

  • Basil-   Steam distilling the plants leaves gives us the Basil oil.  Basil is an anti-inflammatory and used often for rheumatism.  Applying topically with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil will prevent skin sensitivities.  Apply Basil to the bottom of the feet, behind the ears and on the ankles.

I never put much thought into preparing for disability.  Sure, I put thought into preparing for retirement, but preparing for disability?  Nope.  Since I have become one of those that need to prepare for disability I have spent some regretful moments in my own thoughts.  “How could I have not thought about this?”  “Am I the only one that never thought of this?”  Again, nope.  I have found that I’m not the only one.  ( I guess right here would be a great spot for an insurance agent that sells disability insurance to place an ad!)

On a side note here, when I say preparing for disability, I am not talking about how to prepare to get disability.  Although, that will also be something I will more than likely need to do.  Medical records, filling out forms, attorney help etc.

 

Looking At The Numbers

It is a given that once approved for disability you will only be receiving a fraction of your current income.  So how the heck are you supposed to live on that?  For me, it would be impossible at the moment.  I am a 58-year-old single mom of 3.  My 2 oldest kids are in their early 30’s and my youngest just turned 18.  I am self-employed, paid on commission and unfortunately, I am without insurance. (Thank you ObamaCare).  I have made a pretty good income in my career.  However, in the past 10 years, I have had lots of out of pocket expenses for my medical care. I cared for my mom for a short period of time before she passed away from Cancer. Then spent 5 years caring for my dad with Alzheimer’s before he passed.  Not to mention a couple of divorces…

For the past 2 years, I have been thinking seriously about how to survive on disability as my physical body had started to spiral downward with my Rheumatoid Arthritis.  Have you ever had someone say to you, “Why don’t you just go on disability?”  Yep, well, I don’t think it quite works like that.

I reached out to some of my fellow RA Warriors and asked if any of them had the same thoughts I did.  Which were, is it even realistic to even consider being able to go on disability and live?  If so, how did you cope with it?  How did you do it?

Many of them said, “I didn’t have a choice.”  “I lost my home, my car and was homeless for a time.”  Some said, “I rely on my kids.” A few said, “I downsized.  I sold everything and live meagerly.”  Unanimously it was agreed that it was and is difficult.

If I have learned anything from my fellow RA Warriors, it is not to wait until you have no choice.  I found an article from Sapling.com that gave some insights for living on a disability allowance.  Downsizing seems to be a key element to get started on how to avoid losing a home, car and relying on your kids.  Although I would care for my mom and dad again without hesitation (if they were still here), I don’t want that for my kids.

We all know there is no cure for RA.  I am happy that I found some ways to relieve the symptoms of my rheumatoid arthritis naturally. I talk about some of these in my post 3 Best Tips For Combating Morning Hand Stiffness With RA and also The Best Healthy Foods For Rheumatoid Arthritis.

 3 Tips To Combat Morning Hand Stiffness With RA

Let’s talk about how to combat morning hand stiffness with RA. Waking up in the morning with hand stiffness is a common problem for us RA Warriors.  There is nothing worse than waking up and grabbing that first glass of water or a cup of coffee and not being able to grasp that cup, or having that cup slip through your grasp.  Or how about your toothbrush?  Or your hairbrush?  When this first happened to me, the achiness and stiffness were painful and difficult to live with.

 

 

What Causes Hand Joint Pain And Stiffness In The Morning?

Hand joint pain and stiffness can be caused by an injury or a disease such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.  With RA, any long period of immobility can cause joint pain and swelling.  The muscles then tighten around the joints and cause very limited movement of the joints.


How Long Does Joint Stiffness Last With RA?

This is a question your Rheumatologist will ask you at every appointment!  Depending on the severity of your RA will dictate how long the stiffness is going to last.  When there has been a long period of time of inactivity, you can experience this joint pain and stiffness.  For instance, sleeping for 8 hours, sitting in a chair, or in the car for a long period of time can cause joint stiffness and pain.

When I was first diagnosed with RA, the morning hand stiffness would normally last a couple of hours. After receiving treatment through medications from my Rheumatologist, the amount of time was less. It would average about an hour to 2 hours.

As my disease progressed, at my worst, the stiffness and pain lasted ALL DAY!

What you should do when you experience pain and stiffness.

When you experience pain and stiffness in your joints you should:

  • Continue to eat healthily.
  • Stay as active as possible but rest when you need to rest!
  • These compression gloves did wonders for my hands at night.  I put them on at night and when I wake up in the morning I have noticed a big difference in the stiffness and achiness of my hands.

 

Do Compression Gloves Work For RA?

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a confusing disease.  I have noticed that some things work for some people and not for others.  I have had good results with the copper compression gloves.  They took me a minute to get used to but if I put them on at night and sleep with them on for a good 8 hours, I have had noted results!

Be sure that your gloves fit correctly.  These compression gloves tend to run small so size up on these gloves.  Gloves that are too tight can cause constriction of blood flow, which isn’t going to feel good on your RA hands.  Your gloves should feel snug but not be constricting.  The gloves are also great for Raynaud’s Disease, which I also experience with my RA.
